Pre- formed Friends
The girls and boys had created a group before arriving, a nice transition from home to college. The group consisted of girls and boys from NYC private schools in the inner 8 and ones that weren’t.Of course however this is college, time to explore and meet new people. So there was room for expansion, first the boys roommates were added, and then additional girls. Most of the additional boys were from Chicago. It was comforting to them to know that the core group will always be great friends since they shared an upbringing so original to the city, that they generally hit if off. Ross actually came to college with two of his home best friends, recalling that they probably haven’t spent a weekend apart since the 9th grade.
However there is a caveat to being in such a homogeneous group of people that Ross raised. “Out of a group of twenty boys and about 20 girls, I would say there are about three out of the forty that are not from the tri-state area. The frats we want to join are notorious for their brothers being primarily white, Jewish New Yorkers. People even think there is a city-suburbia divide, and to be honest for however much we hang out there might be. Our sub-conscious attitude is either your New York City or your not”
Even though this underlying factor is blunt, it is not to be perceived as automatically negative. It actually attests to one of my previous points about how the city creates a social cohesion so uniquely spontaneous and therefore incredibly bonding.
